Description
Prescribed reading: laboratory interpretation across the training years
Within the Academy curriculum, laboratory interpretation is not a single module — it runs through every stage of training. Laboratory Medicine Decoded: Interpretation of Lab Values from Basic to Advanced is the text that carries a trainee from the first principles of a reference interval to the integrated reasoning expected at board and fellowship level.
Stage one — foundations
Part I (Chapters 1–8) is set reading before clinical rotations: what a reference interval and a decision limit really are, units and conversions, the total testing process, pre-test probability and likelihood ratios, biological variation and reference change values, interferences and artefacts, specimen handling, point-of-care testing and how normal values change across the lifespan.
Stage two — the organ systems
Parts II–XIII form the core of postgraduate study: haematology and the smear; coagulation, thrombophilia, DIC and antithrombotic monitoring; sodium, potassium, calcium and blood gases; kidney function and urinalysis; liver, viral hepatitis serology and fibrosis scores; troponins, natriuretic peptides and lipids; diabetes, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary and bone; microbiology, sepsis markers, HIV, tuberculosis and tropical infections; autoantibodies and vasculitis; body fluids; tumour markers and cardio-oncology; ICU, emergency panels, toxicology, drug monitoring and transfusion.
Stage three — specialty and mastery
Parts XIV–XVII apply the same tests within individual specialties, introduce genetic testing and pharmacogenomics, provide a full compendium of laboratory profiles, and finish with pattern recognition, spurious results, critical values and 100 integrated clinical cases.
Built-in self-assessment
Every one of the 105 chapters states its learning objectives, closes with key points and five single-best-answer questions with explanations, and lists current references. Appendix H provides a rapid board-examination review. SI units are given first, conventional units in brackets.
