The Academy of Elite Doctors runs an annual recognition programme for clinicians whose work has changed practice. This page explains what the awards are, who may apply or be nominated, and how submissions are assessed.
The recognitions
Icon of the Year recognises a senior clinician whose body of work has altered how a condition is managed, taught or organised. Scholar of the Year recognises research output of demonstrable clinical consequence, judged on what changed rather than on impact factor. Fine Minds of Medicine recognises early-career doctors within ten years of primary qualification who have already built something — a service, a register, a teaching programme — that outlasts their rotation.
Who may apply
Applications are open to registered medical practitioners in any country. Self-application and third-party nomination are both accepted; a nomination from a colleague carries no additional weight, so there is no disadvantage in applying for yourself. Platinum members of the Academy hold formal nomination rights and may put forward candidates in any category. See Doctors’ Membership for how that works.
What to submit
A submission needs four things: your full name, degrees and current registration number; your present post and institution; a statement of no more than 800 words describing the work and what changed because of it; and two independent referees who can be contacted. Publications, audit data, service metrics and teaching records may be attached. What the panel is looking for is evidence of consequence — a pathway that now exists, a complication rate that fell, a cohort of trainees who went on to practise differently.
How submissions are assessed
Every submission is read by at least two panel members drawn from the Academy membership, who score independently before conferring. Where a panel member has a working relationship with an applicant, they recuse themselves from that file. Shortlisted applicants may be asked for a short interview. Decisions are final, and unsuccessful applicants receive written feedback on request.
