Questions that teach rather than test
A question bank is only as useful as its wrong answers. Most collections mark the key and move on, which trains recognition and nothing else. The 1,000 questions in this 546-page volume are built the other way round: the explanation deals with every option, and the distractors are chosen because they represent the specific error a trainee is likely to make at that point in the syllabus.
That makes it slower to work through and considerably more useful. A resident who gets a question right for the wrong reason will usually discover it in the explanation.
Where the Academy places it
Assessment reading, used alongside a revision text rather than instead of one. Recall and recognition dissociate under exam pressure, and a trainee who can reproduce a fact when prompted by a stem may be unable to retrieve it cold. The Academy’s guidance to members is to alternate: a chapter of notes, then the corresponding questions, then the notes again for whatever the questions exposed.
Coverage and calibration
Questions span the full DM and DNB syllabus — coronary disease and intervention, arrhythmia and electrophysiology, heart failure, valve disease, congenital lesions in the adult, imaging, preventive cardiology and pharmacology. Difficulty is calibrated to the boards themselves rather than inflated: a candidate scoring consistently above eighty per cent here is generally in a defensible position for the real paper.
Evidence is cited by trial where the answer turns on it, so the explanations remain useful after the exam has been passed. Guideline-dependent answers state the guideline year, which matters more than it used to given how quickly antithrombotic and heart failure recommendations have moved.
