The Academy prevention track: risk stratification, lipid and blood pressure management, metabolic disease and the behavioural work that decides whether any of it is taken.

Description

The least taught part of the specialty

Cardiology training is organised around events. Prevention is what happens in their absence, which makes it structurally under-taught — there is no acute presentation to anchor a lesson, and no procedure to observe. Trainees emerge fluent in managing an infarct and vague about who was going to have one.

This collection is the Academy’s correction to that, and it is required reading on the prevention track.

What it covers

Risk stratification and where the calculators mislead, particularly at the extremes of age and in South Asian populations. Lipid management including the residual-risk problem and current thinking on Lp(a). Hypertension across the treatment sequence. The metabolic and diabetic contribution, including where the newer agents have changed cardiovascular outcomes rather than just glycaemia. Inflammation. Smoking, alcohol and sleep.

The part clinicians skip

Behaviour change gets substantial treatment, on the argument that a correct prescription not taken is a clinical failure whatever the pharmacology. Members frequently report this as the least expected and most immediately useful section.

Who takes it

Academy members on the prevention track, cardiologists running risk-factor clinics, general physicians and family doctors carrying most of this work in practice, and trainees who recognise the gap in their own teaching.
